In summer 2013, after a series of financial, health, and family losses, including loss of a small raw milk dairy started with family, Josh and Kyra grieved extinguished dreams and betrayals by broken institutions, but then they inherited the land. It took a year longer than anticipated and far more cash than was available with initial parent financing. Friends stepped in, enabling the project to reach completion and a mortgage to be obtained. In July 2019, Josh, Kyra and their (then) 6 children moved into the house on 5.5 acres, buying an additional 7.5 acres in spring 2021, financed by a faithful friend.
November 2020, WSDA approved a 1000+ square foot facility plan for processing beef, pastured pork, pastured poultry, and Grade A raw milk. Raw milk was the priority since the family was already milking two cows for themselves. Abundance Endeavors was formed in preparation, and raw milk became available November 2021 and frozen poultry July 2023. The remainder of the facility is under construction, funds and time permitting, with 2024 bringing the commercial kitchen portion online for yogurt, preserves, bakery products, etc. The blog documents the progress of this community effort, which is increasingly co-managed by different community members.
November 2020 also spawned the Garfield Homestead Club, which grew and processed food for club members, partnering with Geist Farms CSA, picking peaches en masse, and exchanging tools and labor. Food growing took place on Abundance Endeavors farm and several other residential lots in Garfield. It is currently seeking members and in 2023 opening a community garden on near North 2nd and Adams.
