Nollie, the remarkably smart and deeply bonded (to her former herd) cow arrived nonchalantly, lowing for her calf. After a difficult time getting her in the stanchion the first time, we thought we were over the hump. We also thought she was Jersey x Swiss, but she was Angus x Swiss.... As the week progressed, she waged a war of wills, which she won handily. Her production reached three cups per milking, and she refused to enter the stanchion. She returned home after the battle of the bulge in which she could not be pulled forward, not pushed, not shocked, not all these simultaneously to get her into the trailer. We ratchet-strapped her in. After finally being bested, tied to the front of the trailer long enough to close the back door, she let out her first deep groan. She joyously trotted from the trailer in Hayden, greeting calf, sister, and mother in her paradise.
